From the Editor’s Desk at 80 Years
In 2016, EQMM’s 75th anniversary year, the highlight of our celebration was a symposium and special exhibition hosted by Columbia University. You can still watch that symposium’s delightful and informative panels and learn all about EQMM’s storied history through links from this website, but I know that with our 80th anniversary issue going on sale this week many readers will also want to hear about what we’ve been doing since then.

August 2021: EQMM columnist Dean Jobb receives rave reviews on new book
Dean Jobb, author of our “Stranger Than Fiction” column, saw the publication of his latest book this summer: The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream: The Hunt for a Victorian Era Serial Killer (Algonquin). The Washington Post recently said “Jobb writes clean, efficient sentences and re-creates Cream’s heartless life in short, highly dramatic chapters,” while Publisher’s Weekly calls the book “a true-crime masterpiece.”

July 2020: Thriller Awards Given in virtual ceremony
During a ceremony at ThrillerFest’s online celebration, the International Thriller Writers announced the winners of the 2020 Thriller Awards. The awards were presented by writers including Sandra Brown, Lisa Gardner, Walter Mosley, R.L. Stine, Scott Turow, and Don Winslow. Tara Laskowski won for her tale “The Long-Term Tenant,” from our Black Mask department (7-8/19). The other nominees were Michael Cowgill (“Call Me Chuckles, EQMM, 3-4/19), Lia Matera (“Snow Job,” EQMM, 1-2/19), and Twist Phelan (EQMM, 11-12/19

July 2020: EQMM stories among Macavity Award nominated work
Mystery Readers International has announced its Macavity Award nominees, which include four nominations from EQMM: Terence Faherty’s Sherlock Holmes parody “The Cardboard Box” (January/February 2019), G.M. Malliet’s Readers-Award-winning “Whiteout” (January/February 2019), Dave Zeltserman’s Edgar-nominated “Brother’s Keeper” (May/June 2019), and Art Taylor’s Agatha- and Anthony-nominated “Better Days” (May/June 2019).

June 2020: Private Eye Writers of America’s Shamus Award winners announced
The winner of the 2020 Shamus Award for Best P.I. Short Story is O’Neil De Noux for his story “Sac-A-Lait Man” (EQMM, September/October 2019), featuring New Orleans P.I. Lucien Caye. Among the nominees were “The Smoking Bandit of Lakeside Terrace” (EQMM, May/June 2019) by Chad Baker, set in a home for the elderly, and “The Dunes of Saulkrasti” by William Burton McCormick (EQMM, September/October 2019), in which surprising events unfold during the Latvian summer solstice.

June 2020: Bouchercon announces Anthony Award shortlist
Art Taylor’s story “Better Days” from the May/June 2019 issue of EQMM, a reflective father-son mystery, has been nominated for an Anthony Award for Best Short Story. Taylor is the author of The Boy Detective & The Summer of ’74 and Other Tales of Suspense (Crippen and Landru) and of the novel in stories On the Road with Del & Louise (Henery Press). Bouchercon 2020, planned for Sacramento, CA, will be taking place virtually.

May 2020: The Crime Writers of Canada announces Arthur Ellis Award winners
On May 21, Peter Sellers won the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Short Story for his dark tale “Closing Doors” from the March/April 2019 issue of EQMM. EQMM’s sister publication Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine had two nominees in the contest: Devon Shepherd for Best Novella and Zandra Renwick for Best Short Story.

May 2020: The Short Mystery Fiction Society announces Derringer award winners
On May 1, 2020, it was announced that the following stories were Derringer Award winners: “On the Road With Mary Jo” by John Floyd (EQMM, January/February 2019) for Best Short Story and “Her Sister’s Secrets” by Brendan DuBois (EQMM, July/August 2019) for Best Novelette. Longtime contributor of stories and translations and friend of the magazine Josh Pachter has received this year’s Edward D. Hoch Memorial Golden Derringer for Lifetime Achievement. Also among the Derringer Award nominees were: “The Dutchy” by Doug Allyn (November/December 2019) and “The Cripplegate Apprehension” by Richard Helms (EQMM, July/August 2019).

May 2020: EQMM represented at Sisters in Crime virtual panel
EQMM and AHMM managing editor Jackie Sherbow took part in an online panel about the short mystery fiction market put on by Sisters in Crime NY/Tri-State Chapter. The panel also featured Jen Conley and Nick Kolakowski and was moderated by Dawn Barclay.

May 2020: Malice Domestic announces the Agatha Award winners
Among the nominees were Art Taylor for Best Short Story (“Better Days,” EQMM, May/June 2019), Barb Goffman for Best Short Story (“Alex’s Choice,” Crime Travel), Laird R. Blackwell for Best Nonfiction (Frederic Dannay, Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, and the Art of the Detective Short Story), and Edwin Hill for Best Contemporary Novel (The Missing Ones). Among the winners were Tara Laskowski for Best First Mystery Novel (One Night Gone) and Edith Maxwell for Best Historical Mystery (Charity’s Burden).

May 2020: Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine celebrate online
In spring of 2020, due to COVID-19, the events surrounding the 2020 Mystery Writers of America Edgar Awards were held virtually, including the Dell Magazines annual awards celebration. In this video, you will see and hear from Dell publisher Peter Kanter, editors Janet Hutchings, Linda Landrigan (AHMM), and Jackie Sherbow, and the 2019 Ellery Queen Readers Award winners.

April 2020: True-crime column “Stranger Than Fiction” moves to the pages of EQMM
Beginning with the May/June 2020 issue, the previously web-only column by Dean Jobb will now be featured in the print magazine. Those columns will also be featured on the website with supplementary content such as archival images and photographs. On alternating months, the website will feature exclusive columns that do not appear in the magazine.

April 2020: The International Thriller Writers release the 2020 Thriller Award shortlist
Nominated for a Thriller Award this year are: Michael Cowgill for “Call Me Chuckles” (March/April 2019), Tara Laskowski for “The Long-Term Tenant” (July/August 2019), Lia Matera for “Snow Job” (EQMM, January/February 2019), and Twist Phelan for “Fathers-in-Law” (EQMM, November/December 2019). The winners will be announced on July 11.

April 2020: Mystery Writers of America announce Edgar Award winners
Among this year’s nominees for the Edgar Awards is Dave Zeltserman, for his tale “Brother’s Keeper” (EQMM, May/June 2019). The story, from our Black Mask Department, is a gritty crime tale. The Edgar Award winners were announced in an online ceremony.

Fall 2019: Taylor and Rozan win the Macavity and Shamus Awards at Bouchercon 2019
The fiftieth Bouchercon World Mystery Convention took place from October 31-November 3 in Dallas, TX, and during that time several award ceremonies took place. On October 31, Art Taylor won the Macavity Award for Best Short Story for his tale “English 398: Fiction Workshop” (from the July/August 2018 issue of EQMM). The Macavity Award has been given by Mystery Readers International since 1987. On November 1, S.J. Rozan was given the Shamus Award for Best Short Story for “Chin Yong-Yun Helps a Fool” (from our September/October 2018 issue). The Shamus Award honors work in the private-eye subgenre and has been organized by the Private Eye Writers of America since 2003. S.A. Cosby, whose work is upcoming in EQMM, won the Anthony Award for Best Short Story (presented by Bouchercon) on November 2.

July 2019: Macavity Award finalists announced
Mystery Readers International have released their 2019 Macavity Award shortlist and included among the nominees are Craig Faustus Buck’s tense and timely “Race to Judgment (EQMM, November/December 2018), Barb Goffman’s clever “Bug Appétit” (EQMM, November/December 2018), and Art Taylor’s metafictional “English 398: Fiction Workshop” (EQMM, July/August 2018 and winner of the 2019 Edgar Award for Best Short Story). Screenwriter and novelist Craig Faustus Buck is the L.A. author of Go Down Hard and Psycho Logic. The stories by Art Taylor and Barb Goffman are both currently nominated for the Anthony Award and were nominated for the Agatha Award earlier this year. You can read the stories here (BuckTaylorGoffman) and listen to them in our podcast series. The Macavity Award is named for the “mystery cats” of T.S. Eliot. Each year the members of Mystery Readers International nominate and vote for their favorite mysteries in five categories.

June 2019: Shamus Award Finalists Announced
The Private Eye Writers of America have announced their Shamus Award nominees, and included in the Best P.I. Short Story category are Twist Phelan, for her tale “Game,” featuring private eye Finn Teller, and S.J. Rozan  for her series addition “Chin Yong-Yun Helps a Fool.” Both stories appeared in the September/October 2018 issue of EQMM. The Shamus Award winners will be announced at a banquet during Bouchercon 2019 in Dallas.

May 2019: Anthony Award Nominees Announced
The Bouchercon convention has announced the 2019 Anthony Award nominations for Best Short Story, and they include two stories from the pages of EQMM: the suspenseful Edgar Award-winning story “English 398: Fiction Workshop” by Art Taylor from the July/August 2018 issue and the darkly funny “Bug Appétit” by Barb Goffman from the November/December 2018 issue. Both stories were also nominated for the Agatha Award earlier this year. The awards will be presented at Bouchercon in Dallas, TX on November 2 after a vote by convention attendees. Among the most prized awards in the genre, the Anthony Awards were named after Anthony Boucher, a mystery and crime fiction author, editor, translator, and critic, who was a columnist for EQMM.

April 25, 2019: The 2019 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Short Story Goes to Art Taylor
At the Edgar Awards Banquet in New York City, the Mystery Writers of America announced that Art Taylor is the winner of the Edgar Award for his short story “English 398: Fiction Workshop.” The Edgar Award was established in 1983 and is widely acknowledged to be the most prestigious award in the genre. Congratulations to Art and the rest of the night’s nominees, winners, and honorees!

April 2019: Twist Phelan nominated for an Arthur Ellis Award
On April 18, the Crime Writers of Canada released their Arthur Ellis Award shortlist for 2019, and included was former lawyer, inveterate traveler, and award-winning author Twist Phelan for her story “Game,” which was published in the September/October 2018 issue of EQMM. The tale relates an action-packed case for international spy Finn Teller revolving around a soccer star and the family he may have left behind. Among the other nominees for the Arthur Ellis Award this year are Therese Greenwood and Sarah Weinman. The winners will be announced on May 23.

Spring 2019: EQMM Announces 2018 Readers Award Winners
The results of the 2018 Readers Award poll are in, and they are: Stacy Woodson in first place, for her story “Duty, Honor, Hammett” (November/December 2018), Josh Pachter in second, for his “50” (November/December 2018), and David Dean in third for his “Sofee” (March/April 2018). April 9, 2019: International Thriller Award Nominations Announced
The International Thriller Writers have included “Window to the Soul” by Scott Loring Sanders in their list of Thriller Award Finalists for works published in 2018. The provocative nominated tale, from EQMM’s September/October 2018 issue, explores the actions of a police officer and father caught in an accident’s aftermath during a dangerous winter storm. Scott Loring Sanders is the author of The Hanging Woods, Gray Baby, and Surviving Jersey: Danger & Insanity in the Garden State. His short stories are collected in Shooting Creek and Other Stories and have been chosen for Best American Mystery Stories 2018. The winner will be announce at ThrillerFest XIV in July 2019.

January 2019: Agatha Award Nominees Announced
The Malice Domestic conference has announced the 2018 Agatha Award Finalists for Best Short Story, and they include two stories from EQMM: the Edgar-nominated “English 398: Fiction Workshop” by Art Taylor from the July/August 2018 issue and the twisty, humorous, and creepy “Bug Appétit” by Barb Goffman from the November/December 2018 issue. The awards will be presented at the Malice Domestic conference in Bethesda, Maryland on May 4, 2019. The Agatha Awards honor the year’s best traditional mysteries.

January 2019: Art Taylor nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe Award
The Mystery Writers of America announced that Art Taylor‘s unique mystery “English 398: Fiction Workshop” is among the 2019 finalists for the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Short Story. The tale, which was originally published in the July/August 2018 issue of EQMM, is told through class notes, letters, articles, and story drafts. Art Taylor is the author of the Agatha Award winning novel On the Road With Del & Louise and he has previously won three other Agathas, an Anthony Award, two Macavity Awards, and three Derringer Awards. The winner will be announced at the Edgar Awards ceremony in NYC on April 25.

January 2019: Nancy Novick announced as winner of the 2019 Robert L. Fish Memorial Award
“How Does He Die This Time?” by Nancy Novick has won the 2019 Robert L. Fish Memorial Award for Best First Short Story by an American Author, as announced by the Mystery Writers of America. The story, a twisty and darkly humorous tale featuring a mystery writer, originally appeared in EQMM’s Department of First Stories in September/October 2018 and was featured in our podcast series. Nancy Novick is a NYC based author, editor, and instructor as well as the main writer for the WestSideWords blog. The Fish Award was established in 1984, and past winners include Doug Allyn and Stephen Saylor; the award will be presented at the Edgar Awards ceremony in NYC on April 25.

October 2018: Josh Pachter celebrates 50 years after first EQMM publication
In 1968, Josh Pachter became one of the youngest authors to be published in EQMM with the Ellery Queen pastiche “E.Q. Griffen Earns His Name.” (You can read more about that experience here.) In celebration, we have published a follow-up story in our current November/December issue (see “50”). You can read the first story here and listen to it in our podcast series starting November 1. On November 14, an interview with Josh will appear at Something Is Going to Happen.

May 2018: Remembering Gardner Dozois
Gardner Dozois, a major figure in the science-fiction community and friend to the Dell fiction magazines, passed away in Pennsylvania on May 27. He was a Nebula and Sidewise award winner for his short fiction, and also a novelist and prolific anthologist in the field. From 1984 until 2004, he was the editor of our sister publication Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine. Before retiring as a professional editor, he won 15 Hugo Awards for his work, as well as many Locus Awards. He played an important role in the history of Dell Magazines and the world of short genre fiction, and we and our colleagues at Asimov’s share the news with sadness.

May 2018: Robert S. Levinson nominated for Shamus Award
The Private Eye Writers of America have announced their Shamus Award nominees for 2018, and the short-story category includes Robert S. Levinson’s May/June 2017 EQMM story “Rosalie Marx Is Missing.” The story is a Vegas tale featuring private investigator Vincent Riverbend, who is enlisted to track down the missing daughter of a mob boss.

May 15, 2018: Brendan DuBois wins Derringer Award for Best Novelette
The Short Mystery Fiction Society has announced that Brendan DuBois’s “Flowing Waters” (from the January/February 2017 issue of EQMM) has won the award for Best Novelette. The story also won the EQMM Readers Award, and you can find out more about it here and in the May/June 2018 issue. Other winners include Robert Lopresti (Best Short Story), David H. Hendrickson (Best Long Story), and John M. Floyd, who is honored with the Edward D. Hoch Memorial Golden Dagger for Lifetime Achievement.

May 15, 2018: Penzler Publishers, A New Publishing Company, Announces Its Inaugural Imprint
American Mystery Classics will be the first imprint from the new publishing company Penzler Publishers from president and CEO Otto Penzler (editor, founder of Mysterious Press, and proprietor of The Mysterious Bookshop). The imprint will reprint works by American detective-fiction writers of the genre’s Golden Age. Distributed by W.W. Norton in hardcover and trade-paperback editions, the first six titles (to be released in October) will be The Chinese Orange Mystery by Ellery Queen, The So Blue Marble by Dorothy B. Hughes, Death from a Top Hat by Clayton Rawson, The Red Lamp by Mary Roberts Rinehart, Home Sweet Homicide by Craig Rice, and The Puzzle of the Happy Hooligan by Stuart Palmer.

EQMM at the Edgars and Malice Domestic
On Wednesday, April 25, EQMM associate editor Jackie Sherbow attended the 2018 Edgars Symposium. The next afternoon, EQMM authors, editors, and friends feted the 2017 Readers Award winners as well as the Edgar Award nominees (including Jeffery Deaver  for his EQMM story “Hard to Get”) at the annual Dell Magazines pre-Edgars celebration in New York City. At the Edgar Allan Poe Awards banquet, editor Janet Hutchings presented the MWA Grand Master Award to Peter Lovesey (please see below for more information). William Link  also a 2018 Grand Master, was introduced by EQMM contributor and scholar Joseph Goodrich. Link and his writing partner Richard Levinson had their start writing fiction in EQMM’s Department of First Stories. The following day, Janet and Jackie traveled to Bethesda to attend the Malice Domestic conference. There, Nancy Pickard  who also began her writing career in EQMM’s Department of First Stories, received a Lifetime Achievement Award. While in Maryland, the editors recorded with authors several stories that will feature in upcoming podcast episodes.

EQMM Editor Janet Hutchings Presents MWA Grand Master Award
At the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Awards banquet on April 26, 2018, Janet Hutchings introduced Grand Master Peter Lovesey. The multiple Dagger Award winning novelist and short-story author first appeared in EQMM in 1979, and he has been a friend to the magazine for many years. Stories by Lovesey have won the EQMM Readers Award and have garnered multiple second and third-place wins in that contest.

April 15, 2018: Derringer Award Finalists Announced
The Short Mystery Fiction Society announced that “Flowing Waters” by Brendan DuBois, from EQMM’s January/February 2017 issue, has been nominated for a Derringer Award for Best Novelette. The story, the tale of a veteran and her dog facing life and loose ends after serving, won the 2017 EQMM Readers Award. You can read it here.

April 9, 2018: International Thriller Award Nominations Announced
The International Thriller Writers have included two stories from the 2017 pages of EQMM in their list of International Thriller Award finalists  “What Could Possibly Go Boing?” by Mat Coward, and “Charcoal and Cherry” by Zoë Z. Dean. Two-time Edgar Award nominee Mat Coward’s darkly humorous tale taking place in the retail world of a novelty shop appeared in the July/August issue. 2017 Robert L. Fish Memorial Award winner Zoë Z. Dean’s haunting narrative about unearthing the truth about a notorious unsolved case appeared in the May/June issue.

Praise for Steven Saylor and THE THRONE OF CAESAR

Steven Saylor’s Roma Sub Rosa series about Gordianus the Finder comprises 14 novels and 20 short stories, many of them first published in the pages of Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, and with this latest book he brings the series to a profoundly satisfying conclusion. His long and fruitful relationship with EQMM began auspiciously with “A Will Is a Way” in the March 1992 issue, which won the Robert L. Fish Award for best debut in the mystery genre. Steven Saylor’s most recent Gordianus short story, “The Staff of Asclepius,” was written especially for EQMM’s 75th Anniversary issue (July 2016) with stories from writers who “got their break” in its pages. Introducing Kristopher Zgorski, EQMM’s new Blog Bytes Columnist
EQMM’s popular feature Blog Bytes has been running nearly continuously since 2006. The brainchild of writer Ed Gorman, its recommendations and critiques guide readers through the vast material related to mysteries found on the Web.

Remembering Bill Crider
On February 12, 2018, Bill Crider—author, critic, reviewer, and EQMM’s Blog Bytes columnist—passed away in Alvin, Texas, after an eighteen-month battle with cancer. Bill was a former professor, award-winning author and writer of multiple series and in several genres, and friend to EQMM as well as many others in the mystery community who will feel his absence deeply. Editor Janet Hutchings remembers Bill at Something Is Going to Happen.

January 19, 2018: Jeffery Deaver nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe Award
Jeffery Deaver’s twisty spy tale “Hard to Get” from the July/August 2017 issue has been nominated for a 2018 Edgar Award for Best Short Story, Mystery Writers of America announced. The winner of the award will be announced at the 2018 Edgar Awards Banquet on April 26. Deaver is a bestselling author whose most recent book is The Burial Hour, from the Lincoln Rhyme series.

William Link and Peter Lovesey to be honored as MWA Grand Masters in 2018
Mystery Writers of America has announced that, along with Jane Langton, William Link and Peter Lovesey have received the honor of Grand Master for the upcoming year. William Link and his writing partner Richard Levinson—the duo who would go on to co-create Columbo and Murder She Wrote among other TV shows—premiered in EQMM’s Department of First Stories in 1954. Work by Multiple Dagger Award winner Peter Lovesey (seen here) first appeared in EQMM in 1979, and he has won the EQMM Readers Award and multiple Readers Award second- and third-prize scrolls.

Remembering Donald A. Yates
EQMM author, translator, and poet Donald Yates passed away in November 2017. He last wrote for us at SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN during our anniversary year about his long history with Ellery Queen. Yates brought many Latin American works into their first English translations, and translated many stories in our Passport to Crime Department from Cuba, Italy, and Argentina—most recently in our August 2016 All Nations issue.

Bestselling mystery master Sue Grafton dies in December
Famed author Sue Grafton passed away at the end of the year, the EQMM editors were sad to hear. Grafton’s last book was Y is for Yesterday (August 2017). The author and her series character Kinsey Millhone were influential to many of the writers and readers in our community. Following an afternoon photo shoot, she appeared on the August 1993 cover of EQMM.

The Center for Fiction relocating to downtown Brooklyn
The E. 47th Street location of The Center for Fiction is now closed, in preparation for a move to downtown Brooklyn in fall 2018. The Raven Award–winning mystery collection within the Center for Fiction’s New York library holds some of the first mystery and detective novels published in Britain and the United States, as well as new fiction.

Janet Hutchings blogged about that event and the rest of the weekend, including her participation in two panels, at Something Is Going to Happen. Associate Editor Jackie Sherbow spoke at the Nero Wolfe banquet, and both Janet and Jackie recorded podcasts with authors, the first of which is available now.

EQMM Participates in the 2017 Brooklyn Book Festival
For the fifth year running, EQMM and the rest of the Dell Magazines fiction titles had a booth at the Brooklyn Book Festival at Brooklyn’s Borough Hall and Plaza. Representing EQMM and AHMM was associate editor Jackie Sherbow.

Contributor and Ellery Queen Biographer Jeffrey Marks Joins the Team at Crippen & Landru 
Award-winning crime-fiction biographer Jeffrey Marks—a contributor of nonfiction to EQMM and its blog and participant in our 75th-anniversary symposium—has joined Doug Greene and the rest of the Crippen & Landru Publishers team as Director of Development and Webmaster. Crippen & Landru’s collections include many short stories originally published in EQMM, including seven anthologies of work by Edward D. Hoch (including the most recent, All But Impossible), as well as collections by Doug Allyn, Peter Lovesey, James Powell, S.J. Rozan, Jon L. Breen, and more. Marks is currently working on a biography of Ellery Queen.

Midnight, Texas, the NBC prime-time show based on the series of novels by Charlaine Harris has just aired its first-season finale. In July, editors Janet Hutchings, Linda Landrigan, and Jackie Sherbow attended a screening of the show’s pilot at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York. The screening and a celebration afterward were hosted by JABberwocky Literary Agency.

From October 12-15 2017, EQMM will be a special guest of honor for Distinguished Contribution to the Genre at the Bouchercon World Mystery Convention in Toronto. An hour dedicated to EQMM is scheduled for 5:30 to 6:30 PM on Thursday, October 12, beginning with an interview of Editor Janet Hutchings by author Art Taylor and continuing with vignettes from sixteen other EQMM authors. Editor Hutchings will also be participating in two panel discussions over the weekend: a short-story panel, from 5:00 to 6:00 on Friday, October 13, and a panel on noir fiction on Saturday, October 14, from 5:30 to 6:30. Editor Linda Landrigan, of Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, will be participating in a panel about plotting on Saturday, October 14 at 10:00 a.m., and Jackie Sherbow, associate editor for both magazines, will be giving a toast at the annual Nero Wolfe banquet on Friday, October 13 at 6:30.

Joyce Carol Oates and Paul D. Marks nominated for the 2017 Macavity Award for best short story
When the Bouchercon World Mystery Convention in Toronto, Canada, convenes on October 12, the opening ceremonies will include presentation of the annual Macavity Awards, sponsored by Mystery Readers International and Mystery Readers Journal. Nominated in the best short story category are two EQMM stories, “The Crawl Space” by Joyce Carol Oates (from our September/October 2016 issue) and “Ghosts of Bunker Hill” by Paul D. Joyce Carol Oates Wins the 2017 International Thriller Award for Best Short Story
On Saturday, July 15, at the annual awards banquet of the International Thriller Writers in New York City, Joyce Carol Oates, one of America’s most important literary writers, was honored for her work in the field of crime fiction. For the second year in a row, she received the award for best short story for work that first appeared in EQMM. This year’s winner, “Big Momma,” from EQMM’s March/April 2016 issue, is the chilling story of an adolescent who falls in with dangerous company. In total, EQMM stories claimed three of the five award nominations. The other nominees were “The Peter Rabbit Killers” by Laura Benedict, Edgar-nominated author of six novels, and “The Man From Away” by Brendan DuBois, author of more than twenty novels.

Derringer Award Winners include EQMM’s Linda Barnes
The Short Mystery Fiction Society established the Derringer awards in 1998 to honor the year’s best short mystery fiction. For 2017, celebrated novelist Linda Barnes won in the best short story category for her gritty EQMM September/October 2016 tale “The Way They Do It in Boston.” Barnes is the author of the Carlotta Carlyle mystery series, and she has also won the Anthony and American Mystery awards.

EQMM Readers Award Winners Honored
At the Dell Magazines pre-Edgars Cocktail Party held on April 27, 2017 , the EQMM and AHMM family of authors, editors, agents, publishers, and others feted the EQMM Readers Award winners. In first place was L.A. native and Shamus Award winner Paul D. Marks, and snagging second and third prizes was Doug Allyn, a prolific, award-winning short-story specialist. E. Gabriel Flores wins the Robert L. Fish Memorial Award
On April 27, 2017, at our annual pre-Edgars party and at the 2017 Edgars ceremony, Seattle author E. Gabriel Flores was celebrated for winning the Robert L. Fish Memorial Award for best first short story by a new American author. Her winning tale from EQMM’s December 2016 issue, “The Truth of the Moment,” portrays a father-son relationship in a small Dominican town and the balance of power there.

EQMM story “The Village That Lost Its Head” nominated for Lou Allin Memorial Award – Spring 2017
The Crime Writers of Canada’s Lou Allin Memorial Award for Best Novella (named for a former CWC board member) is in its third year. EQMM is the source of one of the nominated stories, Peter Robinson’s “The Village That Lost Its Head” (from the September/October 2016 issue)! Robinson’s DCI Alan Banks series has been adapted into a popular television show. In the story, Banks heads the investigation into a strange, grisly murder that draws him into the dark inner workings of a small town.

EQMM story “The Granite Kitchen” nominated for Arthur Ellis Award – Spring 2017
The Crime Writers of Canada have nominated David Morrell’s EQMM story “The Granite Kitchen” (July 2016) for an Arthur Ellis Award! The chilling tale of misdeeds and obsession unfolds through the words of an unreliable narrator as she talks to a realtor about selling her home. Morrell is well known as the author of First Blood, which became the Rambo film franchise.

EQMM story “The Ascent” nominated for Arthur Ellis Award – Spring 2017
Scott Mackay’s “The Ascent,” from the August 2016 issue, has been nominated for an Arthur Ellis Award for Best Short Story by the Crime Writers of Canada! In this short work by the multi-award-winning novelist, a bird watcher takes an excursion to the Andes, and in a suspenseful, dangerous climb finds her fellow adventurers may pose as great a threat as the environment.

A Diamond Anniversary
Throughout 2016, EQMM celebrated its 75th anniversary with special issues and a symposium  and exhibition hosted by Columbia University featuring pillars of mystery fiction, art, scholarship, and criticism such as Joyce Carol Oates, Jonathan Santlofer, Otto Penzler, and Sarah Weinman. EQMM Honored by the Baker Street Irregulars
In 2016, EQMM was honored by the Baker Street Irregulars with A Tip of the Deerstalker for its annual Sherlockian issue and for its attention to reviewing Sherlockian titles in the magazine’s column, The Jury Box. Founded in 1934, the BSI is the oldest literary society dedicated to the study of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the Victorian World.
